Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

'Et tu, Brute?' One of the most well-known lines in history is often all that people recall about the infamous Roman statesman Julius Caesar. But what led to this iconic death? This modern adaptation leaves behind the battlefields of southern Italy, and instead focusses on the timeless power relationships between people trapped in the microcosm of youth, and the painful awakening to a reality of violence and its consequences.

Premiere: April 22, at 9 pm

Performances: April 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30

at 8 pm in the Theater im Romanischen Keller

In recent years there has also been a growing interest in the plays of his contemporaries and successors. Both tendencies are reflected in this year's excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon.

As in previous years, students and staff members of the AS presented their work in progress at the international symposium "Cognitive Explorations into Metaphor and Metonymy". Initiated in 2009 by Prof. Sonja Kleinke, this symposium has become part of the ongoing cooperation between the AS and the University of Budapest. For several years, it has been alternating between the two universities. This year’s conference was hosted by the doctoral programme on “Cultural Linguistics” in Budapest. The AS students who participated received funding by the DAAD.

Anglistenchor Heidelberg performs James Whitbourn's "Annelies"

For the Anglistenchor winter term concert, musical director Jan Wilke has chosen James Whitbourn’s “Annelies”, a moving musical rendition of passages from Anne Frank’s diaries for soprano solo, chamber ensemble and chorus.
In this piece, Whitbourn (b. 1963) combines contemporary choral music with late romantic elements and the Klezmer tradition. The oratorio (libretto by Melanie Challenger) recounts key passages from the well-known “Diary of a Young Girl”. Our first performance will be on Sunday Nov. 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the Alte Aula.
Tickets (9 EUR red./16 EUR reg., fees included) are available from the RNZ-Geschäftsstelle Heidelberg, Zigarren Grimm and Crazy Diamond as well as at the door (as of 10:15 a.m.). Our second concert is on the same day at 7:00 pm at the Ehemalige Synagoge Hemsbach. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated. The duration of the concert is approximately 70 minutes.
