Semesterkonzert des Anglistenchors

Im Semesterkonzert des Anglistenchors stehen sich zwei Messen gegenüber, einerseits die Messe für Doppelchor des schweizerischen Komponisten Frank Martin, andererseits die „Mass for four voices“ von William Byrd. Auch wenn über drei Jahrhunderte die beiden Messvertonungen trennen, besitzen sie einige Gemeinsamkeiten. Beide enstanden als Zeugnis der tiefen Religiosität ihres Schöpfers und nicht für die öffentliche Aufführung: Byrd, der als Katholik seinen Glauben im protestantischen England im Privaten leben musste, schrieb seine Messe nicht für öffentliche Gottesdienste, sondern für kleine private Messfeiern. Und Martin, ein calvinistischer Pfarrerssohn, betrachtete seine Messe sogar rein als Angelegenheit zwischen Gott und ihm selbst; ohne an eine öffentliche Aufführung zu denken, die dann erst 40 Jahre nach der Komposition stattfand. Ergänzt wird das Programm durch ein Orgelstück des niederländischen Komponisten Hendrik Andriessen, „Sonata da chiesa“, gespielt von Dorien Schouten.
Das Konzert findet am Samstag, den 19. Januar um 19:00 Uhr in der Peterskirche Heidelberg statt. Karten für 12 EUR (7 EUR erm.) sind bei der Geschäftsstelle der Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung und Zigarren Grimm sowie ab 18:15 Uhr an der Abendkasse erhältlich.
Ein weiteres Konzert findet am Sonntag, den 20. Januar um 17 Uhr in der Bartholomäuskirche Tamm statt.

Bewerbungsfristen Master of Education:
Erweiterungsfach & Einstieg in höheres Fachsemester

Die Universität Heidelberg führt mit dem Sommersemester 2019 Erweiterungsstudiengänge für die Lehramtsfächer ein. Studierende in der Lehramtsoption des Bachelors oder im Master of Education können in diesen Studiengängen die Lehrbefähigung in einem 3. Lehramtsfach erwerben. Das Erweiterungsfach kann parallel zu den beiden Hauptfächern des B.A./M.Ed. studiert werden oder konsekutiv, d. h. nach Abschluss des M.Ed.

Das Studium des Faches Englisch im Erweiterungsstudiengang ist nur als Hauptfach möglich. Es führt ohne BA-Qualifikation direkt zum Abschluss "Master of Education" im dritten Fach.

Die Bewerbungsfrist für die Zulassung im Sommersemester 2019 beginnt am 1. Dezember 2018 und endet am 15. Januar 2019.

Die gleiche Bewerbungsfrist gilt für Studierende, die im Sommersemester 2019 in ein höheres Fachsemester des (regulären) Master of Education Studiengangs einsteigen möchten. Nähere Informationen erhalten Sie bei den StudienberaterInnen.

Schauspielgruppe winter production: The Father (by Florian Zeller)

The play tells the story of a father-daughter relationship, put under strain by the increasing dementia of the father. The story is told from the perspective of the father, André, and allows the audience to see the world through his perspective - with all the disjunctures, confusion and distress that dementia causes.
The production is co-directed by Dennis Massmann and Timothy Williams (previously 'Twelve Angry Men') and integrates this modern dramatic farce with elements of physical theatre to transport the audience into the mind of André.
While the play is mildly disturbing, it is an important cultural contribution and allows the audience to see the world through the eyes of someone suffering from dementia.

Year abroad Sept. 2019 – June 2020: Oakham School

Every year for the past 19 years, a student from this department has worked as an assistant teacher in the German Department of Oakham School, Rutland, UK. Oakham is a private school with an outstanding reputation, and it offers excellent working and living conditions.

The assistant teaches German conversation to small groups and helps out with German-themed events. Assistants receive free board & lodging plus £905 a month for 12 hours of teaching a week and have access to the school’s enviable facilities, including a swimming pool.

Kick-Off: Second Heidelberg Graduate Student Conference

Like the first time around, this event will be organized by the MA students in the English Studies program, with backing by the department.
The conference will take place on June 7 and 8. The goal is to provide a forum for our young scholars to present their ideas and the results of their research in a public forum.

Organization:
Members of the English Studies MA program are invited to suggest panels. In the next step, anybody can apply to present within one of these panels. The panel organizers will be responsible for the selection of papers.
The description of your panel suggestion should state the thematic range and/or the methodological focus of the presentations you would like to invite, as well as your name and email address. The descriptions should be about 200-300 words long.

Please send your suggestions for panels to margit.peterfy@as.uni-heidelberg.de by March 30.

Once the panels are formed, a Call for Papers will be issued.
We will also need organizational help: to create a publicity poster, to organize the catering (coffee breaks), to document the conference, etc. Please write a short email to margit.peterfy@as.uni-heidelberg.de if you are interested in participating.

Fulbright Summer Institute Grant for students with migration background

Students with migration background in their 2nd to 4th semester are encouraged to apply for a summer school (17 August to 16 September 2019) in San Antonio, Texas, offered on behalf of the Trinity University Fulbright Commission. The grants include travel costs, accommodation on the campus, health insurance and the costs of the programme. Applications have to be submitted by the 4th of March 2019. Completion Grant for International Students

The International Relations Office has limited funds available for international students who need financial support at the end of their studies. Grants are awarded to international students based on social criteria, previous academic performance and previous financing of studies. The grants are awarded once per semester by a commission. They amount to a monthly payment of approximately €300 - €400 and are generally given for the lecture period of the current semester. Students who are registered or are planning to register for final examinations in the summer semester 2019 in a Bachelor, Master or Staatsexamen course of studies can apply. Anglistenchor: Frühlingskonzert

Unser Frühlingsprogramm steht unter dem Motto "Power of Nature". Stücke von Barber, Britten, Elgar, Esenvalds, Schronen u. a. singen wir am 27. April um 19 Uhr in der Christuskirche und am 28. April um 19 Uhr in der Alten Aula der Universität Heidelberg. Im Mai treten wir mit diesem Programm beim Chorfest Heilbronn auf.

Second Heidelberg Graduate Student Conference in English Studies, June 7 and 8, 2019

The programme of the Second Heidelberg Graduate Student Conference is now available online. This two-day conference, organized by the students of English Studies MA program, takes place on June 7 and 8, 2019 at the English Department of Heidelberg University. The keynote addresses will be delivered by Annika Gonnermann (Mannheim University) and Caitlin Smith (University of Notre Dame). Konzert Anglistenchor: Power of Nature

Aus Anlass einer Tour nach Sachsen hat der Chor sein "Nature"-Programm, mit dem er im Frühjahr sehr erfolgreich beim Chorwettbewerb des Schwäbischen Chorverbands war, neu aufgelegt.
In Heidelberg ist der Chor damit am 29.9. um 17 Uhr im Augustinum Heidelberg zu hören. Der Eintritt ist frei.

Contributions to the Study of Language, Literature and Culture

As of August 2019, the English department's e-journal is officially active again. Each published volume contains selected papers written by students of the AS in the fields of literary studies, cultural studies, and linguistics. The main goal of this e-journal is to publish the coursework done at the English department and to offer a platform for our students and their work to receive broader recognition. Papers written in an exclusive context, like the Annual Graduate Student Conference, are published in a special issue.

There will be regular Calls for Papers (advertised on Aktuelles and in the seminar building). Students of all stages, lecturers, and guests of the English department are invited to submit a contribution. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the editors.
