Journal Relaunch: HJES

The Editorial Team of the department’s E-Journal is delighted to announce that the journal has been relaunched under the name HJES (Heidelberg Journal of English Studies). The new name also comes with a new home over at heiJOURNALS, the University Library’s publishing service, and a new website.

We are starting small for now, with one excellent contribution from Linguistics and Literary Studies respectively and an editorial statement outlining our plans for the journal, but we will gradually be expanding our first issue over the course of the coming year. The journal accepts submissions throughout the year, and more detailed submission guidelines will follow in early 2026.

We hope you enjoy reading the first HJES articles and look forward to your contributions!

E–Journal

Before 2025: Contributions to the Study of Language, Literature and Culture

Contributions to the Study of Language, Literature and Culture is an electronic journal issued by the "Anglistisches Seminar" at the University of Heidelberg.

Each volume contains selected papers written by students for courses held at the AS. Further contributions are published as special issues. The journal is open for papers that come from the various fields of study covered by the programme of the AS, i.e. cultural studies, creative and essay writing, literary studies and linguistics. The foremost aim of this journal is to make public the coursework done at the AS and to offer a platform where student papers may receive a broader recognition. Lecturers and guests at the AS are invited to make contributions to this journal.

Call for Papers

Rethinking Us, Rethinking Earth: Exploring the Human in a Changing World

For this issue, we are looking for contributions from linguistics and literary studies that focus on current debates surrounding the human position in contemporary culture. The submissions should focus on ideologies, boundaries, and structures that have increasingly proved to be unstable and insufficient in the 21st century. Knowledge, technology, and reality are evolving, the human (self-)experience is changing, and the planet is facing an environmental crisis. In a time like this, we are challenged to reconsider the human condition and transgress boundaries that have been established in the past.

We welcome papers that discuss human relationships with and are affected by nature, the environment, other humans, and new technologies. If you have written a term paper that fits into any of these categories, or if you are interested in writing an article for this issue of the e-journal, feel free to contact us for further details, prerequisites, and specific formalities.

Deadline for submissions: 01/05/2020
